Wind

Wind power has been harnessed for over 2000 years and is one of the most promising renewable energy resources for electricity generation.

Wind Turbines Picture

How it works...

Modern wind turbines are fitted with aerodynamic blades, which face into the wind. Lift forces from the wind cause the blades to rotate and turn a shaft, which is attached to a generator. The generator produces electricity.

Turbines are fitted with sophisticated control mechanisms including an anemometer, controller and gearbox. These allow the turbine to rotate at different speeds, depending on the wind speed, and to shut down if the wind speed becomes too high.
